Bayshore's Prevention department is busy doing planned activities, presentations and parenting classes in the Erie and Ottawa schools and communities.

Prevention is planned strategies and activities designed to reduce the risk of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use as well as mental health issues in an age appropriate manner. Prevention operates by using a risk/protective factor theory and the theory of asset development.

We offer evidence based and best practice programs such as Stop Bullying Now, Life Skills and the Dina Dinosaur Program in the Erie County schools. Also prevention offers the POWER program to schools in Erie County delivered in classrooms, small groups and one-on-one and includes presentations on anger management, conflict resolution, decision making, how to recognize and handle our feelings and dating violence information. We work with the schools to offer a variety of presentations to meet their needs.

Bayshore offers parenting programs such as Put Parenting First and 1-2-3 Magic. The schedule of classes for Put Parenting First in Erie County and how to sign up are attached. If interested in Put Parenting First in Ottawa County please call Donna Kelley at please call the Bayshore Counseling number – 419-626-9156.

Bayshore also received a grant for Early Childhood Mental Health called Whole Child Matters. This grant involves children from three to six years old. Through this grant Bayshore has an ECMH consultant in one school in Erie County and one school in Ottawa County. The consultants will offer screenings, interventions and home consultation to engage parents of children who may be struggling with classroom behaviors. Through collaboration with school administration, staff and referral sources, the goal is to reduce behavior referrals and increase student's time in the classroom exhibiting appropriate and productive behaviors.

Bayshore also provides Early Childhood Mental Health services which are classroom observation and home visits to parents of three to seven year olds in Erie and Ottawa Counties. This is provided through referral sources and self-referral. Please call Bayshore Counseling Services if interested and ask for Donna Kelley.

Each Put Parenting First session date is a TUESDAY from 9:00AM – 10:30AM. Classes are held  at Bayshore Counseling Services, 1634 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio.  There is no charge for the parenting classes.

Before the first date of each session, the participant needs to contact Donna Kelley to set up an entrance interview.  This is a must, so needed paperwork can be completed and participant gets an introduction to the parent educator. Needs and issues of participants are discussed as well as what will be covered in the parenting sessions.
